What is it?
Writing about special moments (perhaps from a vacation). A diary helps your child to turn their thoughts into words, to put things in a specific order, and to make a story of it. You can help your child to express themselves in writing while they still let you; after a while they’ll probably want to keep it private and forbid you to look!
For who is it?
For children from group 6 and their parents.
What can we do?
Together you can write a daily account of special events (especially during a holiday) about something that has been said, seen, or experienced. This can be made in the form of a story, an anecdote, or short and simple phrases. It can be about something special or about daily occurrences (or maybe even something unusual or out of the ordinary) that your child has noticed.
If you introduce this habit you will see that it will become a useful tool for practising their writing skills. You can ask your child this question: ‘If you think again about that day, what do you think first of?’. An alternative for children from group 3/4/5 is a ‘friendbook’ or a poetry album.
