Exercise
What is it?
Vocabulary is the collection of words which your child already knows. Your child’s ’treasure chest’ of words.
For who is it?
For parents and their children from the age of 2 years.
What can we do?
You can help your child to increase and improve on their vocabulary by correcting them in a subtle way. When you notice that your children mispronounces a word, don’t say: “NO that’s wrong”. But repeat the word (or the whole sentence) and pronounce it correctly. E.g.: “Mummy, shall we take the umbrelly?” Here, you could react in following way: “You want to take the umbrella? What a good idea.” You child learns the most by example. Simply show them the correct way.
It’s the same as showing them how to use the correct nouns and articles in Dutch: When is it “de” or “het”? For you it is basic routine, but children still need to learn it. Make a little game of it, like: What was it, de zout or het zout? De kaas or het kaas? Listen attentively to your child and correct them by asking questions. More difficult: de aanrecht or het aanrecht?
