Exercise (with Dutch words)
What is it?
A part of learning to read in group 3 involves ‘breaking words down into pieces then putting them together’; By breaking words into pieces your child learns which letters and sounds form a specific word.
For who is it?
Children from group 3 and their parents and/or older brothers/sisters.
What can we do?
Make a game of it at home. For example, if your eating with your family, name simple things like spoon-fork-plate-water-glass and ask your child to break the word into pieces: s-p-o-o-n! You’ll see that they’ll be very happy with themselves when they do it correctly.
As they progress, you should try naming more difficult words and with combined sounds). Soon everybody will be doing it while eating as once you start you can’t stop breaking down words!
